I recently lost another friend.
He had been doing so well. He was clean. Getting back in church. Reconnecting with family and friends.
He had a gratitude for his life. He was no longer spending all his money on drugs, so he had extra. And was using that extra to give to those less fortunate. That’s what I call building momentum.
Then one day an old friend called up. And he let his guard down just a little. That slip started a landslide.
Since he had been off drugs for so long, they felt good again. “I’ll just use this once” turned into a several days long bender. He was found on the floor, no pulse, no breath. No life.
I had really enjoyed seeing his transition from addiction to sobriety. I could see the hope filling in him. I could see how he walked more upright. How he would smile more. How he would look people in the eyes again.
Nothing makes you feel more like a failure than to lose a friend. Especially one you were trying to help. But this isn’t about me.
It’s about my friend….
