Substituting One Addiction for Another

When I started treating people with medications to help with addiction, I encountered resistance. Not from patients but from doctors and counselors.

They complained we were just “substituting one addiction for another”

I used to calmly explain the physiology of addiction. The mechanism of action of the medication. The need for pharmacological bridging. The psychological benefit of stiff arming the offending drugs.

Now I just simply respond…

You’re damn right!

And it works.
