Today is the Feast Day of Saints Cosmas and Damien of Rome.
Their icon crowns the top of my small clinic library.
They were brothers and doctors that lived in Rome during the late 3rd century. Called Unmercenaries due to their refusal of payment. Blessed by God, many were healed from illnesses, but also touched by generosity and kindness.
Their good deeds didn’t go unnoticed and they were murdered by a previous teacher.
He was envious of how successful they had become and was said to have been driven “mad with malice”. He invited them to join him on a search for medicinal herbs. Once up the mountain side, he killed them and threw their bodies into a river.
Parts of their skulls can be found at a monastery on Mount Athos while other relics are in Rome.
May these Holy unmercenaries and wonderworkers continue to intercede for us.
