12 steps to recovery (not The 12 steps, but 12 steps nonetheless)

Here are 12 steps that you can take to start your path to recovery.  They are practical and useful.  Don’t be fooled. It doesn’t have to be complicated.  You still need to work the real 12 steps.  But these are going to help you get your life back on track.  Trust me.  They work.

  1. Be free and let others live free.
  2. Turn off the smart phone, computer,  and TV.  Set aside time every day, to live without distraction.
  3. Provide value every day.  Make it a point to provide value to someone every day.  If you have no close relationships, then you need to volunteer at the local nursing home or assist a neighbor, or assist the local animal shelter in providing a good home to a pet.  If you are not providing value, then what is the point.
  4. Eat healthy food.  You do not have to spend any money on the latest diet book to know what to eat.  You should base your meals around fresh fruit and veggies, and nuts.  Drink water.  Done. It’s just that simple.  If this is 90% of your food intake, then you will be a lean, mean machine.
  5. Simplify your house.  This may take some time.  Start with your junk drawer, then your closet.  Get rid of things you don’t care for or don’t use.
  6. Find a cause.  You need to be passionate about something.
  7. Exercise.  You need to be active every day.  This is mandatory.  I recommend 2 to 3 days of weight training and 2 to 3 days of cardio.  The other days can be light walking, hiking, playing outside, or whatever.  Exercise increases  blood flow to your heart, brain, muscles.  Exercise stimulates your mind.  Find something you enjoy doing. This will make it easier.  Running is not the “king” of exercises. If you hate to run, don’t do it.  Riding a bike is fun. It makes you feel like a kid again.  Buy a bike and ride.  Or walk long distances.  Get a back pack and start hiking trails.  Hike for days and camp at night.  Just do something.
  8. Get out of debt.  Free yourself from the slavery of credit.  This may take time but will be worth it.
  9. Be a craftsman.  Hone what ever talents you possess.  Be the best at whatever job you do.  No matter how menial.  In today’s world, you can learn any skill buy watching youtube.
  10. Be thankful.  Give thanks everyday for your life and those around you that bring you joy.  You should pray every day.
  11.  Learn to meditate.  Clear your mind, and the rest will follow.  (En Vogue reference)
  12. Be determined to make a change.  You will no longer associate yourself with failure.  You will succeed.  You must.
