Back in 2007 I was sitting in a lecture hall. I remember it clearly.
The speaker was talking about addiction.
He told us addiction crossed all boundaries. It didn’t matter what color you were, what religion, what job you worked, or how much money you had.
A few weeks later I got the call. My friend was dead.
He’d never again kiss his wife, sing silly songs, or tuck his daughters into bed.
No more witty jokes or midnight runs.
The world lost something great that day.
And it changed my path as well. Because later I would dedicate myself to treating addiction and all the other lost causes in the world.
But here’s the truth: I don’t treat addiction to make the world a better place. I treat addiction to make myself better.
Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned. It’s that life is for the living. And as long as you’re alive, you have another chance.
It doesn’t matter how many times you failed. Or how bad you think you’ve done.
You’re alive!
SO WAKE UP
And do something amazing with your life.
Because tomorrow may be too late.
And there are no lost causes.
Thank you for this.
You’re welcome…and thanks for reading
Wear that medal everyday. There are no lost causes only overlooked ones. Thanks for helping those lost causes. May they may us have the courage and strength to continue.
Thanks Rick and Mary for all y’all do! You continue to be an inspiration to me every day
