3 things that you can do NOW to change your life (for the better)

WAIT!  STOP!

DON’T READ ANY FURTHER

OK, you’ve been warned.

I’m about to offer you two choices.

A red pill and a blue pill.

Take the blue pill.  Trust me.  Just take the blue pill and go back to your normal life, with your perfect matching bed sheets and comforter, your Netflix marathons, your gas guzzling SUV, your 2.5 kids.  There is nothing wrong with it.  Take the blue pill and go back to sleep.

If you keep reading, you will never be able to go back.

Are you ready to follow the rabbit hole wherever it goes?

Here are 3 things you can do to change your life forever.

Remember, you were warned.

1. Be fearless

I lived in fear for a long time.

Afraid to be myself.

But who exactly was I afraid of?

At some point, I just decided that I would be me and nothing else.  Take it or leave it.  And I became free.

But overcoming fear is a daily practice.

It took me a long time to have the courage to start this blog.  Even though it was something I have wanted to do for years.

Why?  Well, I’m not a writer.  I thought people would laugh.  “Stick to doctoring” they would say.  Or, I thought no one would care.  I was even worried that people would be annoyed by my incessant optimism. They would discover the real me and hate me. But, why does any of this matter.

Can I not be free to be me?  Once I let go of my fear.  Once I decided that I would be brave and steadfast and true to myself,  I felt unstoppable.

Why do you fear rejection?  There is no one that can reject YOU but YOU.

You are, at this moment, exactly what your creator designed you to be.

You are the accumulation of genetics, sweat, tears, smiles and fate.

Your past is behind you.  You are left with the now.  Which is exactly where you should be.

There is no one that can stand against you.  No insults that can penetrate.

You is kind. You is smart. You is important.
― The Help by Stockett, Kathryn published by Amy Einhorn Books/Putnam (2009)

Take failure as a way to learn.  Consider it feedback.  Make appropriate adjustments and move on.

Do not be afraid to try.  No one is holding you back.  And no one can push you forward.  You just have to keep momentum and see where the road goes.

There is nothing wrong with asking for help.  You will not be looked down on.  In fact, you may actually make someone else’s day better.  You may allow them to be able to help you and may even make them smile.

So be a positive influence and ask for help.  It’s OK.

What have you wanted to do but haven’t due to fear?

Start your own business? Go back to college?  Take guitar lessons?  Have you wanted to take up mixed martial arts?  Start a blog? Write a book? Sing at church?  Start a business?

Leave your fears behind and see what will happen.  I promise, you will be glad you did.

2. Give more than you take

A little esoteric, and difficult to measure, but it’s a sound principle.

Find ways to help someone else everyday.

If that seems too generic, try this: figure out a problem someone else has, and be the solution.

At night, think back over your day and brainstorm ways you could’ve helped more.

If you have a business, make it your mission to provide as much value to your customers as possible.  It will pay back 100 fold.

Make service your standard.

If all you do is take, you will only horde misery.

“Living is giving”  I have heard said.

No one has taught me this more than my wife.  She is the most generous person I have ever met.

And I do believe that it is impossible to live a full life without giving of yourself on a daily basis.

It can be difficult.  It can hurt. You may have to sweat some. You may have to cry some.  But it’s worth it.

3. You become what you are, so be what you want to be

Don’t wait for some external circumstance to change you.

You must live your values NOW.  You must continue to grow.  You do this daily.

Money will not make you generous.

Health will not give you will-power.

Relationships will not fulfill you or cure your loneliness.

An organized schedule will not make you patient.

My point is, if you are greedy, then having money will give you more options to be greedy.

If you are depressed, then having relationships will just give you someone else to complain about or someone else to blame.

Having health will only give you a longer life to feel miserable.

Unless you do something about it.

Practice gratitude NOW.  Practice generosity NOW.  Practice patience NOW.  Practice kindness NOW.  Practice self-control NOW.

Work on these things now.  Even if the timing doesn’t seem right.  Even if things are difficult.

These 3 things seem simple enough, so why do we struggle?

What’s keeping you from starting today?

Try to practice this daily. Sometimes the Devil creeps in and all I want is for my life to be “the way it is supposed to be.” I keep waiting but my head tells me this is it. My heart says , “wait.” After a couple of days of sleep I quit dwelling in the past and get back to what God has for me to do.

I needed to read this today! Thanks for your inspiring words of wisdoms. In today’s world I think we are so busy that we forget to actually let go and be ourselves. We have allowed the world to shape and mold us, instead of us shaping and molding the world. Great words by a wonderful person! Good luck with your blog… I will definitely read more. Positive is what we need to be most in a world that is so dark! BE THE LIGHT!

Doctor, I apologize in advance if this comment is long. I have been a patient of yours for several years now. I received your blog information today while at your office. I immediately started reading your latest blog entry while waiting for you to come into my room. I continued reading the entries once I arrived home. I have read every single one, from the latest to the earliest. I am so blessed to have found you! You have always been kind, patient and most importantly, understanding. During my highest and lowest points, I have never felt judged by you. I have always been very comfortable talking with you about my life and my trials. But there are many things I have wanted so badly to talk to you about and to get your opinion and advice about during a visit. But, I wasn’t sure you would care or have time to listen to my ramblings, uncertainties, and fears. After all, the good doctor is a very busy doctor. And like you said, you aren’t a therapist.

I want you to know that you have inspired me! Starting today I’m uncluttering my life… starting with my junk drawer and moving on to my closet. 🙂

I only hope and pray that you realize how big of an impact you are making in the lives of us that are truely seeking help.
